Northwest outlasts WWCC to move into the Region IX North Finals; Western needs a win on Saturday to get another shot at Northwest

CAPER – In another epic match, Western Wyoming and Northwest needed five sets to decide who the first team would be in the Region IX North Tournament Championship. When the smoke cleared, Northwest was the team to move to the finals.

The first set was a typical WWCC vs. Northwest game as neither team really had an advantage. Northwest was able to get the important points in the end to take set one, 27-25. The Mustangs came right back in game two and this time it was Western with those crucial points to even the match with a 25-23 win.

The Mustangs let game three get away from them as Northwest was able to take a big lead early. Western could not overcome the early deficit to fall 25-19. With their backs against the ropes, it was Western who jumped up quick in the fourth set. After getting a good lead early, WWCC cruised to a 25-20 win to force a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set was everything everyone expected as it went back and forth and soon both teams had passed the 15 point mark. Western had match point several times but Northwest was able to fight them off and turn the tables to take a 20-18 win in the fifth.

The Mustangs still have a shot at the championship but will have an extra match to get there. Western will play the winner of Casper College and Laramie County Community College at noon on Saturday with the winner facing Northwest in the finals. Whoever faces Northwest in the finals will have to beat them twice for the title.
