Train Rider Arrested East of Rock Springs

SWEETWATER COUNTY — A homeless freight jumper was removed from a Union Pacific train and charged with criminal trespass on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Jason Love of the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office said that Deputy Sheriffs Dave Henderson and Mike Klapell responded at around 12:30 PM to a report from Union Pacific employees of an illegal train rider aboard an eastbound freight train.

The train was stopped east of Rock Springs near the Black Butte Road, where the deputies boarded it and arrested John Gil Millner, 32, originally of Santa Rosa, California.

Millner told deputies he was trying to reach Denver, with an ultimate destination of Boston.

Love described train riding as “unbelievably dangerous.”  Not only is the chance of injury or death very high, he pointed out; train riders also risk assault, robbery, or sexual assault from other train riders.

Criminal trespass is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum possible penalty of six months in jail, a $750 fine, or both.
