SWEETWATER COUNTY – Over 170 people attended the Sweetwater County Child Developmental Center’s Family Friday event last week. The SCCDC’s fourth Family Friday event was titled “Popcorn Reading Partners” and focused on early childhood literacy. The two hour event was hosted at both SCCDC locations in Rock Springs and Green River.
“We wanted to encourage families to read with their children. Reading to a child early and often not only strengthens the emotional bond between parents and their child, but also improves a child’s ability to succeed right from the start of their formal education,” said Rendi Belcher, SCCDC Early Childhood Special Education Teacher.
Children enjoyed story times, making books, receiving free popcorn, and visiting with the SCCDC’s special guests. In Rock Springs, children enjoyed listening to stories and relaxing with special guest “Dallas the Dog”. Kids in Green River were entertained by Clifford who performed stories throughout the event.
The SCCDC also partnered with other organizations. Representatives from the Student United Way helped with reading stations, Parents As Teachers provided free books for every child, and the Sweetwater County Library System read stories with “Dallas the Dog” in Rock Springs and brought Clifford to the Green River Center.
“Kids Around the World” is the SCCDC’s next Family Friday event on March 20th. The event will be internationally themed and held at both SCCDC locations in Rock Springs and Green River.
