Cowgirl Tennis Posts Five Singles Wins on Saturday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five wins in singles action highlighted the day for the Wyoming tennis team with play continuing at the Air Force Invitational on Saturday in Colorado Springs.
“We played another day and continue to get better,” head coach Dean Clower said. “During singles play the upperclassmen really played with a lot of passion and showed how we compete the Cowgirl way. We still have a lot to work on but today was a step in the right direction.”
The Cowgirls battled back in singles play by taking five of seven matches on Saturday. UW was led by Magdalena Stencel with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Nini Guenslet followed by Nastya Tokareva over Sabrina Demerath, 7-6, 6-2.
Dorottya Jonas only lost three games with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lexi Turley followed by Tessa van der Ploeg beating Maggie O’Meara 7-5, 7-5. Wyoming’s final singles match victory came from Sanne Hoekstra with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Veronica Dodds.
It was a tough outing in doubles action on the second day of the tournament for UW. Jonas and Koonik were the only ones to come away with a victory. The duo defeated Tracy Landram and Dodds, 6-2.
Stencel and van der Ploeg lost 6-0 to Mary Meyers and Lily Forlini while Talbert and Hoekstra came up short, 6-4, against Chloe Forlini and Jocelle Rudico. Tokareva and EMU’s Sharma fell 6-2 against Meredith Laskey and Elisa Nelson.
Wyoming will wrap up the weekend Sunday with singles and doubles play.
Ashouri’s Hat Trick Leads Cowgirls in 3-0 Victory Over the Bengals

Cowgirls still unbeaten at home
LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming soccer team won its 10th straight home game on Friday afternoon, 3-0, against the Idaho State Bengals at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
Sophomore forward Shaina Ashouri notched all three goals for the Cowgirls. UW is now 4-1-3 on the season and remain unbeaten at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex since 2013.
Sophomore defender Alisha Bass crossed the ball to the middle of the pitch, where Ashouri put it in the back of the net for her first goal of the afternoon at the 14th minute mark. Her next goal came off a rebound in front of the net in the 79th minute when Idaho State blocked two of freshman forward Jessie Gentle’s shots.
Ashouri’s last goal came from a well-placed through ball from freshman forward Jessie Gentle. Ashouri notched the first hat trick of her career. She now leads the Cowgirls in goals with six on the year.
UW had 10 players tally 25 total shots on the afternoon. Ashouri led the team with seven, while Gentle was next with five. Sophomore defender Kimmy Burbank had three.
Defenders Taylor Burton, Katie Marcheso and Alyssa Murry added two shots apiece to the total. Forwards Anne Hinman and Kayla Cryer and defenders Sammi Dunda and Alisha Bass round off the shot attempts for Wyoming with one each.
The Cowgirls notched their fourth shutout of the season as freshman goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree kept the Bengals scoreless through 90 minutes of play. She had two saves on the afternoon with one in the first half and one in the second.
UW will return to the pitch next Friday at 4 p.m. MT to battle the San José State Spartans.
Cowboy Joe Club Auction on Oct. 16 is Sold Out

LARAMIE – The 29th Annual Cowboy Joe Club Auction sponsored by Infinity Power and Controls has sold out. This year’s auction will be held Friday, October 16th at Little America Hotel & Resort in Cheyenne.
The annual auction, historically the Club’s single-most successful fundraising event of the year, has reached a capacity crowd of 600 attendees.
“With a sell-out crowd and the number of items up for bid, we believe we can raise over $275,000 after expenses, for 400 Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes,” said, Samantha Freeman, Director of Special Events for the Cowboy Joe Club. “Revenue raised from the event will be matched by the State of Wyoming in their commitment to Wyoming Athletics,”
The evening will include a silent auction, dinner and live auction with over 30 items. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 5 p.m., when the doors open for thesilent auction. Madden Brothers Auctions will serve as auctioneers during the live auction, with appearances from the UW Spirit Team and UW Cowboy Wrestlers, as well as other coaches and UW Administrators.
The following day on Oct. 17 the Wyoming Cowboys will take on Nevada for the annual Homecoming game.
Fallon Lewis joins Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Staff
LARAMIE – University of Wyoming head women’s basketball coach Joe Legerski rounded out his staff on Thursday with the hiring offormer Cowgirl standout Fallon Lewis. She will become UW’s Director of Recruiting and replace Mike Petrino who left for Colorado.
“I am pleased to announce the addition of Fallon Lewis to the Wyoming basketball staff,” Legerski said. “Fallon will bring the same energy and love for Wyoming that she demonstrated as a player. She is eager to learn and will become a tremendous mentor and coach to the young women in our basketball program.”
Lewis returns to her alma mater after spending eight months playing for CB Arxil in Pontevedra, Spain. In 24 games, she averaged 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per contest. She also spent time over the summer as a private basketball trainer.
Lewis had a highly successful two-year career (2013-14) with the Cowgirls. An Honorable Mention All-Conference selection during her senior campaign, she played in 62 games with 31 starts.
In her final season with Wyoming, she averaged 14.3 points and a team-leading 8.9 rebounds. Lewis also recorded 20 points and 21 rebounds in a game becoming only the second player in school history to achieve that. As a junior, she came off the bench and averaged 6.1 points and 3.6 boards in 31 contests.
“I’m so appreciative for this opportunity to be back at the University of Wyoming and to work with the great staff that we have in women’s basketball,” Lewis added. “Being able to further my career with Cowgirl basketball and make that transition in a program that I am already familiar is a huge benefit. I can’t wait to start working with the team and to help our student-athletes succeed both on and off the court.”
Prior to UW, she spent two seasons at Sheridan College from 2011-12. Lewis was an Honorable Mention NJCAA All-American selection in 2012 and a two-time Region IX All-Conference selection. She helped the Lady Generals to a 45-21 mark and a NJCAA North Sub-Region IX title over her two years.
A Dayton, Wyoming native, Lewis graduated with her degree in business administration from the UW in May of 2014 and was a two-time Academic All-Mountain West selection.
