Archie Hay Post 24 Opens State Tournament Play Tuesday

ROCK SPRINGS – With the Wyoming American Legion Baseball Single A and B champs decided, the state will now focus on Double AA.

The Wyoming AA American Legion Baseball State Tournament will get  underway Tuesday in Cheyenne. Rock Springs Archie Hay Post 24 will enter as the third seed from the west. They will open up against the two seed from the East, Cheyenne Post 6 at 1 p.m.

The Post 24 Sand Puppies had a busy week heading into the tournament with a double header against Vernal and games against Jackson and Casper.  Against Vernal, Post 24 found offense to take two games, 18-6 and 16-9.

In the 18-6 win, the Post 24 bats went to work. Trevor Hautala had four hits while Holden Cain added a pair. Mortensen led the team with four RBI’s while Cain and Nate Baldwin each added two runs batted in. Koltin Legerski pitched seven strong innings to led the Sand Puppies. Vernal scored four in the top of the seventh to make the final score closer than it really was.

In the second game against Vernal, Archie Hay Post 24 trailed 6-4 heading into the fourth inning. Vernal scored all six runs in the top half of the third. Post 24 scored eighth runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take control. Cain was again big at the plate with three hits and four RBI’s.

Against Casper it was pretty much all Oilers as they scored 14 runs in the first six innings while holding the Sand Puppies scoreless. In the end the Oilers took a 16-2 win.

In the final regular season contest, Post 24 faced Jackson. Rock Springs led most of the game taking a 3-2 lead in the second and holding it until the eighth inning. Jackson scored one in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and in the bottom of the ninth were able to push over the winning run. In the end, Post 24 came up just short 4-3.

Mortensen was responsible for two of the Archie Hay Post 24 runs while Cain had three knocks in the game. Hautala pitched the entire game going 8.2 innings with seven punch outs.

Post 24 finished the season with a 17-22 record overall while their opponents in the first round, Cheyenne Post 6, finished 48-15. Cheyenne finished the season winning seven of its last eight games but lost to Gillette in the season finale, 15-13.

This will be the first meeting of the two teams this season. Cheyenne Post 6 has spent most of the season battling out-of-state teams with the majority of competition coming from Colorado.

Gillette and Casper enter the tournament as the two top seeds. With the state title in Single A, Cody will enter the tournament as the fourth seed from the west and will open with Gillette.
