ROCK SPRINGS – The local Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, formally with the YWCA in Rock Springs, has recently merged with Greater Wyoming Big Brothers Big Sisters to better meet the needs of Sweetwater County.
It was determined this change would allow both the YWCA and Big Brothers Big Sisters to improve their efforts toward their individual missions.
The new office of Big Brothers Big Sisters will be housed in the Plaza Office building located at 1471 Dewar Drive, Suite 147, and will be staffed by two employees. Kathy Vasa, recently moved to the area from Loveland, Colorado, has over 15 years of non-profit management experience and will serve as the organizations Community Engagement Director and manage Big Brothers Big Sisters business affairs in Sweetwater County.
Kathy will focus on fund development, community involvement, and volunteer recruitment. Tarynn Martin, a longtime resident of Rock Springs, will be the organization’s Case Manager, and will focus her efforts on matching mentors with youth in the community and providing a variety of services directly to individuals involved in the program.
“We have a very exciting first year planned for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Sweetwater County and we are very excited to get off to a great start.” Said Vasa.
We have already started the planning process for our Bowl for Kids’ Sake event scheduled for April 30th, it’s our largest fundraiser of the year. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a fun community event and we are hoping for a large show of support.” -Kathy Vasa
Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Big Brothers Big Sisters serves youth age 5 to high school graduation, and is one of the only prevention programs in Wyoming proven to affect a broad range of social issues. Program evaluations consistently show that after entering the program, children are less likely to become delinquent, use alcohol, tobacco or drugs, or drop out of school.
Thus, becoming better citizens in our community, improving their lives and the lives of their families.
Big Brothers Big Sisters will be hosting an Open House at their new location on February 25th from 4:00pm–6:00pm. The community is encouraged to stop by and meet the staff and learn about the programs and services available through Big Brothers Big Sisters.
