CODY – A $1.95 million highway improvement project is scheduled to begin in March between 10th Street and Cody Labs on U.S. 14-16-20, which includes 8th Street and Sheridan Avenue.
The street and sidewalk improvements are scheduled between milepost 50.64 (Cody Labs) and milepost 51.78 (10th Street) in Cody.
By contract, the project must be complete by June 15, and all concrete work is required to be complete by May 15.
Project scope of work includes pavement rehabilitation, including asphalt milling and re-paving of three inches of asphalt pavement and asphalt wearing course; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades; replacement of broken curb and gutter, double gutter and sidewalk; and replacement of a traffic signal pole at the southwest corner of the 8th Street/Beck Avenue intersection at the entrance to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
WYDOT Cody Resident Engineer Todd Frost said prime contractor Mountain Construction Co., of Lovell is scheduled to begin mobilizing equipment to the area about March 1, and weather permitting, the contractor is scheduled to begin removal and replacement of sidewalk, double gutter, and curb and gutter.
“The contractor will begin work at 10th Street and work on the westbound lane. Work will progress to the west, and concrete work on this side of Sheridan Avenue and 8th Street is scheduled to be complete by April 16,” Frost said. “The contractor is scheduled to then start on the eastbound side of 8th Street starting at Cody Labs, and will progress eastward with the flow of traffic.”
All concrete work is scheduled to be complete by May 7.
Frost said asphalt milling is scheduled to begin May 9, with paving scheduled to begin on May 16.
The project schedule and all highway and sidewalk improvements are dependent upon favorable weather.
During concrete work, motorists should expect single-lane closures on the side of the highway being worked during working hours (7 a.m. to 8 p.m.). “One lane of traffic will be maintained on that side of the highway, and two lanes of traffic will be maintained on the other side of the highway,” Frost said.
“During milling and paving operations, motorists should expect work on one-half of the highway, while two-way traffic is carried on the other half of the highway,” Frost said.
Frost said access to businesses will be maintained at all times. Any work on businesses accesses will completed on one-half of the approach at a time, unless alternate access has been coordinated with the landowner.
Outage scheduled for U.S. 14-16-20 tunnel lights near Cody
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is scheduled to cut power Monday, Feb. 29, to the lights inside the big tunnel on U.S. 14-16-20 west of Cody.
The power outage is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Feb. 29, and the power outage is scheduled to end about 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 3.
Drivers are advised to pay heed to the signs at each end of the tunnels, advising people to “Turn Headlights On For Safety” when driving through the tunnels.
“The signs are black and white, which means Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers can cite drivers who don’t comply with the signs’ message. It’s a good idea to turn on your lights anyway for safety, and turning your headlights on will definitely improve visibility during the upcoming planned power outage,” said Cody Beers, WYDOT public relations specialist in Riverton. “Drivers are also reminded of the 35 mph speed limit when driving through the tunnels.”
The BuRec power outage will take place on the 6.9 kV power line near the tunnels. The power line is also connected to a BuRec transformer, which in turn feeds a Western Area Power Administration metering cabinet. This cabinet feeds another power line, which feeds the Wyoming Department of Transportation tunnel lights and exhaust fans.
