SWEETWATER COUNTY – Officials at Sweetwater County continue to watch revenue streams as numbers remain bleak.
At Tuesday’s Sweetwater County Commission meeting, County Treasurer Robb Slaughter gave the commission an brief update on what they are seeing statewide finanically. Slaughter and County Assessor Pat Drinkle recently came together to look at the latest numbers from the state.
According to the numbers, the state is seeing a 20 percent decrease in surface mining royalties. Underground coal has seen a 10 percent increase while trona has also seen a small increase of 3 percent in the current fiscal year.
The big drops Slaughter relayed came from oil and gas. Currently oil is down 43 percent while gas is currently showing a decrease of 50 percent. Slaughter said if these numbers continue in the final six months of the fiscal year, the state could be looking at a decrease of $637 million.
However, Slaughter said he anticipates the slide will not be as significant during the second half.
“In my opinion we should see less of a decrease over the next six months which will make the decrease closer to $600 million,” he explained.
If the projections hold, Sweetwater County would see a decrease of $6 million in the general fund next fiscal year.
