ROCK SPRINGS – One man, cowboy hat over his eyes, climbs on the back of a 1,000 pound beast whose only objective is to do whatever it takes to throw him off. A bead of sweat runs down the cowboys face as you sense a little nervousness, but the tightness of the muscles in his arm shows he’s ready. Get ready for rodeo Rock Springs. The Mountain States Circuit Rodeo kicks off tonight with gates opening at 6 p.m.
One of the last events in October for the complex is the Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo which starts this Thursday. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and the action and dirt will fly at 7:30 p.m. There is also a VIP area. Tickets can be purchased at Murdochs and the Rock Springs and Green River Chamber of Commerce.
Public Relation Director Chad Banks said the top 12 cowboys in the Mountain State Circuit will compete at the event. The complex is hoping the Wool Riders Muttin Bustin will bring local fans to the rodeo. Banks said they will be limiting the participants to 25 a night. Currently half the spots are taken. On Saturday, the top three riders from both nights will compete for the prize.
Youngsters who want to take on the woolly sheep can still register. Banks said riders can register at the Mountain State Circuit website, Murdochs and before the rodeo Thursday and Friday up to 15 minutes before the gates open.
Participants need to be between 4 and 7 years of age and 60 pounds and under.
The Muttin Bustin will take place at 6:30 p.m. before the main event starts. The one who can tame the sheep will win a cash prize, a belt buckle and a chance to compete at the world finals in Fresno, Calif.
Kandi Pendleton, Events Coordinator reminded the board last year there was a major snowstorm during the event. This year the forecast is looking very good. Complex Director Larry Lloyd stressed to the public this is the only PRCA sponsored rodeo which takes place indoors.
“It’s really a big deal,” Lloyd said.
During the discussion Lloyd also said they are hoping for a good turnout, otherwise, next year’s event may have to be moved closer to New Years Eve.
