ROCK SPRINGS – A former Rock Springs man is in custody in Montana on charges originating in Florida.
Sweetwater County Sheriff Rich Haskell said William Thomas Smith, 47, is charged as a fugitive from justice and Interference with Custody out of Pasco County, Florida.
Haskell said Smith’s charges are a 3rd degree felony in Florida.
Authorities say Smith, who lives now in Florida with his 13-year-old son, has been under investigation for drug use by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Child Protective Services in New Port Richey, about 38 miles north of Tampa. When he recently tested positive for methamphetamine, a Circuit Court judge ordered him to bring in the boy, but he failed to do so.
Smith had former contacts in the Rock Springs and Farson-Eden area, and Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office detectives helped Florida missing persons investigators track Smith to Montana, where he was arrested by officers of the Billings Police Department on December 5.
Haskell said Smith’s teenage son is in the care of Montana authorities and will be returned to Florida soon.
No bond has yet been set for Smith.
