ROCK SPRINGS – Do you remember your prom? Get the best clothing, flowers, hair done, all to look your best for the event which will last in those memory banks forever. On Friday, several individuals received a special present as they prepared to make those memories for themselves.
On Friday morning clients and employees of Life Skills met at Great Clips to get that special present. Direct Support Provider Hope Richards and program manager Anne Swingle explained Great Clips donated their time to make sure the clients had the best hairstyles for the special event.
“It totally impacts us,” Richards said on Great Clips’ service. “Many can’t afford it so it’s a huge help, but it is also an ego booster.”
Great Clips Manager Jamie Hamilton said doing this for Life Skills and their clients was not putting them out in any way and is a great experience.
“The whole point of Great Clips is being involved in the community,” Hamilton said. It’s absolutely great and we just love it.”
As Amber Scheuerman’s fingers created magic, she said doing this is fun not only for the Life Skills Clients, but also for the staff at Great Clips.
“It’s great fun,” Scheuerman said. “We love to do something that’s out of the ordinary for us.”
The prom will take place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday night at the Young-At-Heart Recreational Center. Richards said they came up with three or four ideas for the theme and decided on an 1980s prom theme.
A DJ will spin records for the prom goers, and a special dinner will be catered by the senior center. Swingle explained they have a male client who has been asking to do a prom for several years and this year they finally agreed.
Of the 50 clients Life Skills serves, this will be the first prom for many and the excitement around the event has been brewing for several months. A king and queen will be crowned, and other awards given, including best dressed, best dancer and, because of no shave November, the males have asked for a best facial hair award.
“One of our older male clients told me it has been a life-long dream to be crowned king of the prom,” Swingle said. “To be able to fulfill those type of dreams and bring happiness to our clients is heart warming to me.”
Richards said it’s really about dressing up and feeling like a prince or princess for a night.
As the first ladies finished their prom styles and thier smiles radiated, they showed off their hair and everyone in Great Clips had a warm, proud smile.
“I love donating my time, especially when it’s a good cause,” Basia Chambers said. It’s good to give back to the community.”
