Mechanic

JOB DUTIES:

1.    With the beginning of the work week the Field Mechanics meet with the Mechanic Supervisor and they have a ½ hour safety meeting. The rest of the week there is a tool box meeting to review and discuss safety issues.

2.    The Mechanic meets with the shop and field mechanic to learn what heavy equipment are broken down. They discuss what equipment is tagged out and not to be operated until repaired. The Supervisor instructs what equipment is broken and needs to be repaired. The Diesel Mechanic talks to the equipment operator and dispatch and tries and diagnose the problem with the equipment. The Field Mechanic drives the repair truck into the mine where the broken down equipment is located. They drive a field truck that has an automatic transmission, power steering, air suspension seats, with lumbar support The  Field Mechanic uses an on board manufactures computer to diagnose the problem with the pieces of equipment

3.    The Diesel Field Mechanic will remove and replace flat tires on coal haulers; front end loaders; scrappers; graders; water trucks; and backhoes. The Field Mechanic will perform repair work in the mine on coal haulers; front end  loaders; dozers;  scrappers; coal and overburden drills; graders; water trucks; and. back hoes etc. On the back of the field truck is a crane that is used to lift and move parts that weigh in excess of 75 lbs.

4. The Diesel Field Mechanic replaces air hoses and hydraulic hoses that are broken on coal haulers; front end loaders; scrappers; coal and overburden drills; graders; water trucks; and backhoes. They remove and rebuild the air and hydraulic hoses cutting the hoses to length   and using a hydraulic press to clock and set the fittings to connect the air and hydraulic hoses.

5. The Field Mechanic replaces heavy equipment clutches; brakes; brake drums; transmissions; etc.

6. The Field Mechanic performs a PM service check on the equipment draining and replacing all fluids such as oil, antifreeze, transmission fluids and hydraulic fluids.

7. The Field Mechanic uses a cutting torch and welder to repair broken steps or hand rails on the heavy equipment. They will use cutting torches to cut of worn nuts or bolts. They use hand tools, power tools and air and pneumatic wrenches to perform maintenance and repair work on all types of mechanical equipment.
