Kaylee Hughes

Meet Kaylee! Kaylee is our design master at SweetwaterNOW. She always finds a way to create something beautiful, even out of some of our high-flying ideas (yes, they happen..) She is a threat on the camera, with video, and any graphics. A triple threat star on the team.

Kaylee Hughes is the Communications Director at SweetwaterNOW. She is a Sweetwater County native but spent most of her childhood in Manila, UT – you know that tiny little town South of here where you’ve probably stopped to grab gas or ice cream while out at the Flaming Gorge.

For as long as she can remember, Kaylee has always had a passion for being creative. Whether it’s photography, videography, storytelling, graphic design, or almost everything in between. She’s always ready to create something that grabs your attention.

Prior to working at SweetwaterNOW, Kaylee worked at the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce as the Communications Director where she gained experience in marketing and design and an appreciation for creating relationships within the community and working with local businesses.

She has enjoyed continuing those relationships and building new ones during her time at SweetwaterNOW. She also enjoys being able to sharpen her skills as a designer, photographer, writer, and beyond.

A little more about Kaylee

Describe your typical workday.
During a typical workday, I’m usually designing something – whether it’s an ad for a client, images/gifs for social posts, a page for the website (like this one), or just something random I was asked to do. I usually have some big project I’m working on and I write the bi-weekly #HOMETOWN HUSTLE articles. Check it out. I also write our daily newsletter Monday-Saturday. If you haven’t subscribed yet, you should – SUBSCRIBE HERE.

What are you most passionate about professionally?
Professionally, I am most passionate about mastering and finding new ways to create engaging, and quality content that catches the eye.  I love being active in the community and getting to know and learn from the business leaders in Sweetwater County and beyond.

If you weren’t so dang good at your job, what would you be doing for a living?
If I wasn’t working here at SweetwaterNOW I would probably be a full-time freelance photographer/videographer/graphic designer. I’ve also always wanted to start my own clothing/lifestyle brand.  I generally want to make all of the things, but I’m not very good at monetizing any of it on my own – and a girl’s gotta eat.  When I feel like I have no creativity left inside of me, I convince myself I could do something related to psychology. I think it’s really important to try to figure out how people’s experiences affect the way they behave.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I think I always knew I’d be doing something creative.  My delirious 10-year-old self wanted to be a singer… But I’m a terrible singer, so being the considerate human I am, I don’t sing, unless I’m in the car by myself… You’re welcome.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Loyal, adaptable, realistic.

How would most people describe you?
Some people may say I’m a little awkward and reserved, some may say the exact opposite, and some may say I’m a mixture of both. I’m a complex person, hahaha. I did ask my sister because I knew she’d be honest and this is what she said, “I would describe you as a very determined, ambitious and sensible person. You pretty much tell people how it is. You have a way of telling people things they need to hear instead of what they want to hear, in a good way. But you’re also very sympathetic when needed. You are driven and have a very contagious essence about you. You know how to make people laugh.” …Aaaand that’s the nicest thing she’s ever said to me.

What are 3 of your pet peeves?
1. Hearing people eat, chew, or drink anything! If I’ve heard you chew a piece of gum, eat any type of food, or drink anything – I’ve 100% imagined punching your face. I haven’t punched anyone, and trust me that is a huge testament to my self-control.
2. When people aren’t willing to learn.
3. When people lie or are manipulative or passive-aggressive. Life is already complicated enough, don’t make it worse.

What are you happiest doing when you’re not working?
I’m happiest when I’m with my family and my doggo (preferably in the mountains). I have the cutest nieces and nephews. Watching them grow up is the best. I have yet to discover anything I enjoy more than being around the people I love – and I doubt I ever will.

Do you have a pet(s)?
I have a Jackchi (Chihuahua & Jack Russell Terrier) named Finn. His personality is the best when he’s not chewing anything up or peeing in the house… He is the best cuddler and spends a lot of his time under a blanket that he covered himself up with.

If you could be anywhere, right this minute, where would it be?
Just somewhere new, with someone I love. The farthest from Wyoming I’ve ever been is, Phoenix, AZ – which is depressing, I know.

What is your favorite food?
ALL OF IT. I especially love anything covered in cheese or chocolate. But don’t ever come at me with a glass of milk. I CANNOT understand how anyone can drink a glass of milk. NASTY. NASTY. NASTY.

What would your personal motto? Or your favorite quote…
“I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there.”
-Stephen Chbosky

Is there anything else you want to share about yourself on the world wide web?
Nope. You already know too much…
