GREEN RIVER – The Cody Cubs stood on top of the mountain for the second year in a row after repeating as the American Legion Single A Baseball State Champions. They outlasted Green River on Friday to take the title, 10-3.
For the Knights, State was a battle from the beginning. Green River had to travel the long way to get to the title after losing to Cody on Wednesday, 16-1. After Wednesday’s loss, the Knights needed extra innings against Lovell and controlled Evanston for wins to continue on to Friday.
The Knights would open Friday’s competition against Gillette with a spot in the championship on the line. It did not look good early for Green River and they trailed 6-1 early. The Knights found their offense scoring 15 unanswered runs to make it to the title game by a score of 16-6.
Green River was ready for the rematch against Cody but again found themselves trailing early. The Knights only run in the first four innings came from Isiah Munoz. The Cubs scored three in the fifth and three more in the sixth to jump out big in the final stretch of the game. It could have been much worse for Green River as Cody left the bases loaded in both the fifth and the sixth inning.
Blake Gelinas and Munoz each added RBI’s in the top of the seventh for Green River but Cody was able to close the door and take the title, 10-3. Cody did everything they needed to as they outscored the competitors in the tournament, 49-7 to repeat.
The Knights had several players and their manager honored at the District Level. When the state honors were handed out, several members of the team received additional honors.
After being named District Manager of the Year, Brad Hatfield was honored as the Single A Manager of the Year. Isiah Munoz, Tyler Vendetti and Brendan Hopikins were named All-State First Team.
