CAPSERĀ – Coming off one of the biggest wins in school history, the Rock Springs Lady Tigers will look to keep it going as they open the Wyoming 4A State Basketball Championships against Laramie. The tip is set for 6 p.m.
The Lady Tigers have had an up-and-down year but are heading into state with a ton of momentum after beating Natrona and winning the 4A West Region. Rock Springs finished the season 16-6 overall but only went 5-5 in conference play.
The fourth seed from the east, Laramie comes in with a strong record of 6-4 in conference and 16-8 overall. However, the regional tournament did not go as planned. After beating Cheyenne South to qualify for state, the Lady Plainsmen lost to both Cheyenne East and Cheyenne Central to fall to fourth place.
The two teams are fourth and fifth in 4A in team scoring with Rock Springs averaging 55 points per game while Laramie comes in averaging 50.5 points a game. Defensively, the Lady Tigers are giving up 45.2 per contest while Laramie has been tough only allowing 42.7 a game. Both teams shot about the same with the Lady Tigers hitting 37 percent of their shots while Laramie comes in averaging 34 percent on the season.
Rock Springs comes in with the two top point getters in 4A. Maggie Justinak leads the league with 16.5 points per game while freshman Ky Buell is right behind in second with 15.8 points per contest. Laramie also comes in with two players in double figures led by Lexi Pully at 10.8 per game. Jen Aadland is right behind hitting 10.3 points per game on the year.
Rebounding was key in the Lady Tiger’s run at Regionals and will be again at State. They are led by Selena Cudney who is averaging 6.6 boards a game during the season. Aadland is the top rebounder for the Lady Plainsmen grabbing 7.2 per contest.
