ROCK SPRINGS – Loretta Lynn coming to Sweetwater County is becoming more of a reality. No, not the singer, but one of the largest motocross series in the United States.
For some time now, Rock Springs motocross has been in discussions with the Loretta Lynn officials about hosting a possible area qualifier. The group had to take several steps to make this a reality. They had to get American Motocyclist Association certification and host a AMA sponsored event. Both of which have been completed.
After submitting their application, the group has been in discussions since. On Tuesday, President of Rock Springs Motocross Wes Smith said they have a tentative date for the area qualifier. It is on Mother’s Day weekend.
While excited about the news, Smith emphasized several times this is tentative and they have not received complete confirmation.
“We have not received anything in writing yet,” Smith said.
The area qualifiers for the Loretta Lynn bring in between 400 to 600 riders. Smith said it is a safe bet there will be around 500 riders. Those who qualify in the area and regional qualifiers will head to Loretta Lynn’s ranch where they will race against the best in the Nation.
Sweetwater Events Complex Director Larry Lloyd said when you start talking about bringing 500 riders and their families to the area it is a big event.
On a separate note, Lloyd said the BMX Club has a new board and they to are searching to bring bigger events to the area.
Smith also reported they are preparing for the first race of the indoor series. It will take place Nov. 21-23. There are three more scheduled after that. Dates include Jan 23-25, Feb 20-22 and March 6-8. The indoor race will have a open practice Friday night and racing Saturday and Sunday.
