ROCK SPRINGS – “Celebrating people with disabilities in the workplace”: That’s the purpose of the annual Mayor’s Leadership Awards.
Held during Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Mayor’s Leadership Awards are put together by NOWCAP Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for people with disabilities. The event will be at 8 a.m. Wednesday, October 16 at the Sweetwater Events Complex.
To put a new spin on this annual event, it’s being held as a breakfast this year. The breakfast menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, Danishes and fruit.
Mayors Carl Demshar and Hank Castillon will hand out awards in the following four categories:
Community Leader of the Year: This award is for an individual whose leadership has provided opportunities to individuals with a disability that has helped increase their levels of independence in the areas of employment, self-sufficiency, advocacy and inclusion.
Employee of the Year: This award is for an individual 21 years of age or older who has overcome his or her disability and become a person who has contributed to the success of a business.
Business Champion of the Year: This award is for a business that has provided employment opportunities and championed for the rights of individuals with disabilities.
Youth Champion of the Year: This award is for an individual under the age of 21 who has overcome a disability and has made the difference in the lives of others, or to an individual who has made a difference in the lives of others with a disability.
NOWCAP has received more than 40 nominations this year.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month, held in October, is a national campaign to raise awareness about disability employment and to celebrate the contributions of American workers with disabilities. This year’s national theme is “Because We Are EQUAL to the Task.”
