CAPER – The Western Wyoming Mustang Volleyball squad opened the 2014 Region IX North Tournament with a straight set win over Eastern on Wednesday.
The Mustangs dominated early in the first set and took a nice early lead. At one point WWCC had an 18-7 lead. Eastern tried to make a run but Western was able to hold for the 25-16 win.
The second set was even to start as Eastern and Western played even volleyball. The score was tied at seven, when Western started to find its groove. The Mustangs went on a 13-3 run to take a 20-10 advantage. Eastern came storming back and was able to get within six, 21-15. Western was able to hold off the Eastern run to take a 25-18 win in the second.
The third was all Mustangs as they dominated from the start and did not allow Eastern to get any momentum. WWCC was able to take the straight-sets victory with a 25-5 win in the third.
Western will move on to face Casper on Thursday night at 6 p.m. The Mustangs swept Casper in both regular season matches including the last match on Oct. 30. Both Western wins over Casper were in four sets. Casper also opened the tournament with a straight-sets win over Laramie County Community College.
In the other second round match, Central will face top seed Northwest. Central beat Sheridan on Wednesday in straight sets while Northwest enjoyed a first-round bye.
