ROCK SPRINGS – After several months of debate, a policy addressing “profanity in print” will once again be in front of the Rock Springs City Council for a vote.
The new policy first appeared in front of the council on August 2. It was brought forward by the Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Board after several parents complained of offensive language on t-shirts as well as tattoos with offensive language.
The council debated it at the August meeting but felt it needed to be more specific. Several councilman voiced opinions that the new policy was too vague. They also had concerns about leaving the decision up to staff at the recreation facilities.
The policy went back to the Parks and Rec Board who asked Rock Springs City Attorney Vince Crow for advice on moving forward. In an email, Crow provided language he believed would be appropriate moving forward.
In a letter to the Rock Springs City Council, Park and Recreation Chairman Ron Cheese informed the board they approved Crow’s language.
“After review and discussion, we are recommending that the following policy, as proposed by Mr. Crow be accepted by the Council and applied to the Rock Springs Family Recreation Center, the Rock Springs Civic Center, and the Wataha Recreational Arena,” Cheese wrote.
The new proposed language which the council will vote on Tuesday night states:
“The City of Rock Springs recreational facilities are intended to provide a safe, non-threatening, family friendly environment for its patrons. Attire, language or other forms of expression that is considered obscene or patently offensive will not be permitted.”
