The Mustangs, ranked second best in the nation, head to the 2022 NJCAA Wrestling Championships this week, which are set to begin Friday morning and conclude on Saturday night with the championship matches. It’s a tournament of ups and downs, featuring the best talent the NJCAA has to offer.

Among the best on the mat will be ten Mustangs who have developed themselves, overcome adversity and committed to the blueprint for success on the national stage.

For six of the 10 Mustangs going to this year’s championships, this will be their first taste of the bright lights. Three of those wrestlers, Joseph Mecham, Tyce Raddon and Koby Johnson earned starting spots over three of the team’s returning All-Americans, which speaks to the depth of this roster which has enough talent to get the job done.

Christian Smoot is heading into the tournament as the highest seed for the Mustangs. Smoot is the number one seed in the 174 division. In the first round, he will wrestle William Tucker of Triton.

Returning All-American Garrett Ricks is a two seed in the 125 division. Ricks has not lost a match this season to an NJCAA wrestler.

Going into the tournament as three seeds are returning All-Americans Caleb Nathan at 141 and and Collin Smith at 165.

As fourth seeds, Rigdon Cordingley will represent the Mustangs at the 157 division and Tyce Raddon at 184 who also hasn’t lost to an NJCAA wrestler this season.

In the 133 division, Western will send out Joseph Mecham as a six seed and at 149, River Wardle enters as the seventh seed.

Rounding out the roster will be Tyler Scheurn at 197 as the eighth seed and heavyweight Koby Johnson as the tenth seed.

This year’s championships are bound to be filled with surprises and spectacular finishes.
