RS Rec Board hears update on Rec Center and Civic Center pool maintenance

ROCK SPRINGS – With one indoor swimming pool ready for the public to dive in, the other one is preparing for its face lift.

At the Rock Springs Recreation Advisory Board meeting, Director Dave Lansang gave the board an update on the progress of the Rock Springs Family Recreation Center and Civic Center pools. The Civic Center has been going through plaster repairs. The plaster work is part of routine maintenance and has to be completed once every 15 years.

Lansang reported to the board that the Civic Center plaster work is complete and crews are finishing the final details such as water temperature and chemicals. Lansang said the pool should be open early next week sometime between Monday and Wednesday.

With Rock Springs swimmers ready to hit the Civic Center, the RSFRC pool will start repairs in October. Lansang explained staff noticed moisture in the walls up the stairs toward the north tower. The moisture was caused when cold winter air met with the moist, hot air from inside the building.

“If it was not caught, it could have led to mold and mold abatement,” Lansang said.

Work to remove the moisture will include removing drywall and insulation to make sure the spots of concern are dry and there is not places where cold air can get back in. The closure will definitely put stress on other pools but Lansang explained staff has already been moved to make up for the void.

“With the pool being down, we will have several lifeguards who will not be watching it,” Lansang said. “We have moved them to help add extra lessons to take place in the lap pool.”

The repairs should take about a month and Lansang expects the pool to be back in service in November.
