ROCK SPRINGS — The Rock Springs City Council will review a resolution entering into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreement between the City of Rock Springs, the City of Green River, and Sweetwater County for the purpose of pursuing a 1 cent general purpose sales and use tax.
The Council is schedule to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday for its regular meeting at city hall. During its meeting, the Council will review a resolution entering into an MOU agreement with Green River and Sweetwater County. Under the agreement, each group agrees to pay $10,000 to support the 1-cent committee.
According to the resolution, the MOU is “for the purpose of sharing the costs of providing information to the public regarding the submission (of) a proposition to the electors of the county imposing an excise sale and use tax of 1 percent upon the retail sales of tangible personal property, admissions and services within Sweetwater County, to go towards funding public safety agencies due to escalating costs.”
The MOU goes on to state “public safety agencies includes, but limited to, ambulance service providers, the Sweetwater County Combined Communications Center, and other local government tax supported public safety organizations.”
The money collected from the tax will also go towards economic development, including “Increasing employment, stimulating industrial activity, augmenting sources of tax revenues, fostering economic development stability and economic diversification.”
At a previous meeting, the Council did not move forward with the 1-cent general purpose tax. However, the majority of the county voted in favor of moving forward at that time. The voters will make the final decision on November 2, 2021, which is when this tax will appear on the ballot.
