SWEETWATER COUNTY – Although summer is just getting started, many groups have been busy bringing a variety of events to the area. On Tuesday night, the Rock Springs Motocross Club gave an update on its events at the Sweetwater County Fair Board meeting.
The summer racing series started big with the Loretta Lynn Qualifier. This was the first year for the national racing competition in Rock Springs. Rock Springs Motocross President Wes Smith said the event started off strong but the weather had other ideas.
“Mother nature kicked us in the teeth,” Smith told the board.
Many riders came out for the practice session but then the rains came. Smith said they had many riders cancel at the last minute due to the weather. Not all was lost as rider count for the qualifier was 143 with racers from as far out as Tennessee and South Carolina. Smith said they were shooting for numbers between 200 and 250.
Not wasting any time, the club has started planning for next year. Smith said they have already turned in the application to host another area qualifier next year. He explained to the board with Miller Sports Park in Utah closing, there is a chance they will be able to get a later date next year.
On June 13-14Â the club hosted its second race, a Wild West Series race, at the complex. Again Smith said they had a tremendous turnout for practice. This time however, rider count for the weekend was just under 450 riders according to Smith.
The summer series has three more races left with the next one being a High Plains Motocross Association race July 25-26.
In closing, Smith thanked the board for all the support they have been giving club.
“Without the support of the complex, we could not do what we do,” Smith said.
