CASPER – While those in pads and helmets usually get the props, several other groups work hard to put on a show every Friday night on football fields around the state. Recently, the marching bands of Wyoming showcased their talents at the 2015 State Marching Band Festival.
Casper would be the battle ground as 19 schools from around the state got a chance to show what they could do on the field. Nine received superior ratings, while other awards were given out for outstanding brass, drum major, and percussion to name a few. Among those with Superior ratings included the Rock Springs High School Marching Band.
Director Brian Redmond said this is the fourth year the band has performed at the state marching festival, with “certainly the best results” in this period of time. Redmond explained before that, there had been a period of time when there was not a marching band at RSHS. He said he knows John Novotny had a marching band during his time as director but did not know how well they did.
“As far as our success, I’d have to attribute it to the dedication of our students, who began working on this music over the summer, our student leaders who helped teach and encourage our newer members and the help and support from the RSHS administration and Mrs Stevens, who were willing to give their time and energy to help make this work.” – RSHS Director Brian Redmond.
While Rock Springs received a superior rating, the Green River High School Marching band also hit the field and impressed. They were one of eight schools around the state to receive an excellent rating. GRHS was also honored for outstanding drum major.
The Green River High School Band also scored another win recently with the help of Sweetwater County School District No. 2. The SWCSD No. 2 Board recently approved financial support, approximately $5,400, to help Green River students chosen for the Wyoming All-State Marching Band. The money will allow these students to travel to California to participate in the 2016 Rose Parade.
