COACH’S CORNER

Q: Let’s talk a little bit about last season. What were you proud of? What did you wish went better?

Walker: “I was not involved with indoor last year, but can tell you that they did have good success at the state meet with several champions and place winners. However, most of these athletes have graduated and we are a much younger team this year. I am looking for us to just focus on improving from meet to meet.”

Q: What are your initial thoughts about this upcoming season?

Walker: “We are very young this year with only six seniors on our roster. With only three meets to qualify for state, and the fact that an athlete has to have one of the top eight times or one of the top nine marks in a field event to qualify, it is going to be a challenge to get to the state event. However, our group of athletes this year are working really hard so far and are willing to try different events to find a fit for them and to help this team. As a coaching staff we are really encouraged by that.”

Q: How do you compare against the competition?

Walker: “Without having spring track it’s hard to tell who will be the better teams this year. Sheridan boys and Central girls are the returning state champs in indoor.”

Q: Any other thoughts you’d like to include?

Walker: “With basically a new staff and a young team, we are looking to establish our culture and identity right away. We want to grow this program and be able to compete at the state level in the next few years.”
