RSHS Speech and Debate has success in Jackson Tournament over the weekend

The Rock Springs Speech and Debate team had a strong performance in a earlier tournament this year in Salt Lake City (photo is from Salt Lake Event). Over the weekend, the team had another solid performance in Jackson.

ROCK SPRINGS – It was a good weekend for the Rock Springs Speech and Debate team in Jackson. The team had 11 finalists in seven events.

On February 6th and 7th, 19 Rock Springs’ students competed with approximately 200 other students from 13 other high schools. Of the ten events offered at the Jackson Hole High School Tournament, Rock Springs had 20 semifinal slots in eight events and 11 finalists in seven of the events.

Bringing home trophies in speech events were: Megan Lord who finished third out of 45 competitors in poetry, George Fowler with a first-place win and Amari Bertagnoli who finished sixth out of 28 extemporaneous speaking competitors, Samantha Eaton finished fourth and Natasha Bentley in sixth among the 19 students doing humorous interp, Summer Anne Corbett placed sixth out of the 28 doing dramatic interp.

Performing even stronger on the Debate side included Christian Peterson who tied for third with four wins and one loss competing with 23 others in Lincoln-Douglas. The Rock Springs Public Forum team of Taylor Mehle and Austin Griffith tied for third out of the 16 teams in PF and in Congressional Debate, Tyler Warren finished third while Christian Peterson finished second out of the 30 competitors.

Rock Springs final score was 52 points, just exceeding Natrona County’s 51, well over Powell’s 41,and handily beating Worland at 31. Douglas finished with 28 and Evanston finished with 27 points. Cody, Riverton , Saratoga, Star Valley, Greybull and Hot Springs all had some success.
