Sweetwater County Fair Board hears update on last weekend’s motocross races

ROCK SPRINGS – While last weekend’s motocross event turned out to be a pleasant surprise to organizers, motocross talks on another front continued to be positive.

Rock Springs Club Motocross President Wes Smith spoke about the club’s progress at the Sweetwater County Fair Board on Tuesday night. He reported their January event actually turned a profit.

In the November race, the club lost approximately $600. Although he did not say how much profit they had in this month’s race, Smith said they had 95 riders on both Friday and Saturday and joked they were able to pay the band. Smith also mentioned; they are looking at the possibility of having a barbeque for racers, spectators and families in upcoming races.

Smith also reported to the board that they recently had talks with the Loretta Lynn qualifier for a possible 2015 event. Currently, the club is looking at becoming American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) certified.

The AMA recently released its 2014 area qualifier schedule for the Loretta Lynn qualifier. The local club is looking to add Rock Springs as a 2015 stop of the tour. In 2014, the program has races in 32 states with a total of 51 area qualifiers which run from February through the end of May. At the end of the tour, the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship will take place at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

This year Lakewood, Colo., and St. George, Utah are the closest Loretta Lynn Qualifiers in the area.

West pointed this out in the Tuesday night discussion. He said the event organizers were interested because there was no race in this region. Smith said they would not commit fully but called the talks “very promising” and “very positive.”

Coming up, Smith said they are finalizing races that will be on June 21-23 and a Wild West event on Aug. 16-17. Smith said they were working on a third summer race.
