COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — After a long, hard-fought first day at the 2021 NJCAA Wrestling Championships, the Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) Mustangs celebrated all 10 wrestlers earning All-American status.
It was a special moment between coaches and wrestlers: pure joy to put it one way.
The top seven wrestlers in each weight division are crowned All-Americans and all 10 Mustangs achieved the status in dominating fashion. Five of the 10 matches saw pins and two were technical falls.

Western also jumped from third place to first place in the team standings with 103.5 points, 8.5 points ahead of second place Clackamas — last year’s defending champions. With Western being the only team in the tournament with all 10 wrestlers still in play, the team title is shaping up to be a reality.
Thursday will feature the championship semifinals in the morning. Western’s Anthony Herrera (157), Collin Smith (165) and Mason Christiansen (174) made it through to the championship semifinals. Should they win, they will move on to the championships on Thursday night.
The rest of the team will compete in the consolation bracket. Garrett Ricks (125), Destin Summers (133), Caleb Nathan (141), Cameron Metcalf (149), Andrew Nicholson (184), Tyler Scheurn (197) and Wyatt Kearn (285) will each be looking to take home third place in the consolation championships.
