UW Tennis Earns Win over Bears, 6-1

LARAMIE– The Wyoming tennis team (2-1 overall) moved to 2-1 in dual play with a 6-1 win over Northern Colorado Bears (1-2 overall) on Sunday morning.

“I thought we were pretty resilient today,” head coach Dean Clower said. “This was one of the best matches that we did a nice job coming back on. We didn’t play our best, got down in some spots, but came back when we needed to.”

UW Won Two of Three Doubles Matches

Wyoming got off to a good start in doubles action by winning two out of three matches. Senior Magdalena Stencel and sophomore Ana Tkachenko made quick work of Carrigan Blanchard and Sarina Chhabra, 6-0.

Sophomore Milka Genkova and freshman Myiah Scott clinched the point for the Cowgirls with a 6-4 victory against Madeline Doherty and Mana Koitabashi.

At the number one spot, juniors Tessa van Der Ploeg and Elisa Koonik dropped a tough one, 7-5, against Rafa Mora and Tristen Bryant-Otake.

Singles Matches Recap

The Cowgirls carried the momentum over in to singles action. Tkachenko cruised to a two-set win, 6-1, 6-0, over Doherty followed by a straight set win, 6-2, 6-4, by van Der Ploeg over Bryant-Otake.

Stencel rallied back after dropping the first set, 6-1, to win the next two 6-3, 6-0 over her opponent Mora. Koonik had a battle with Chhabra but came away with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory.

The final two Cowgirls in action were Genkova and Scott. Genkova defeated Blanchard, 6-2, 6-2, while Scott fell short against Koitabashi, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, against Koitabashi.

Up Next

The Cowgirls will have a few weeks off before returning to action on Friday, February 16 against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The match is set for 4 pm MT in Lincoln.
