ROCK SPRINGS — Around 10:30 p.m. last night The Rock Springs Police Department was dispatched to Cody Motel located at 75 Center Street, over a suspicious package that had apparently been delivered to the motel.

The package that was in the lobby had a bad return address and was posted with excessive postage. Officers decided to call out the Sweetwater County Bomb Squad to deal with the package.  The area was evacuated and traffic controlled.

During the investigation it was revealed that James Casper, a guest at the hotel had actually put the package in the lobby to be mailed with the motel’s outgoing mail.

The bad return address was to hide his location from an ex girlfriend who he didn’t want to know his current address.

The bomb squad was deployed and they used a robot to disrupt the package with a high pressure water stream.

The package was found to not contain any explosive materials.

It did contain a small amount of marijuana. Casper was charged with marijuana possession and taken to jail.

The scene was cleared around 12:30 p.m.
