ROCK SPRINGS – The Office Information Systems Department is partnering with Eastside and Pilot Butte Elementary Schools for Digital Citizenship Week from Nov. 10- 15. This awareness project is designed to promote digital literacy, etiquette and awareness for students, parents, faculty, and the general public, and to encourage them to participate in activities promoting computer literacy and digital citizenship with daily themes and discussion starters.
A highlight of the week will be a Family Night event to be held on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Eastside Elementary. Western faculty will partner with the Prevention Management Organization of Wyoming and officials from Eastside Elementary and Pilot Butte Elementary to host the program for families that want to learn more about being digitally literate. Topics will include: Dangers of Technology; App Etiquette; Digital Detox; Online Safety; and Cyberbullying, among others.
Other of the week’s featured activities can be completed on or offline. These include: the Digital Detox Challenge, in which students are encouraged to schedule a tech break or “digital time out” at least once per day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; and “Don’t Text and Drive,” in which participants are asked to visit AT&T’s It Can Wait website at https://www.itcanwait.com/all and take the pledge not to text and drive. The OIS Lab at Western will also offer information, bookmarks, and educational posters describing the Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship: Digital Access; Digital Commerce; Digital Communication; Digital Literacy; Digital Etiquette; Digital Law; Digital Rights and Responsibilities; Digital Health and Wellness; and Digital Security.
