Winter Motocross season jumps past years while summer events have Events Complex looking for hay bales

ROCK SPRINGS – Rock Springs Motocross has finished up a successful winter season and is looking at even more exciting events this summer.

Wes Smith, Rock Springs Motocross director, reported while he did not have the final numbers for the last race, rider numbers were again up, marking an increase for every winter race. He reported they actually had to run heat races in the 50 division which they have never had to do before.

“We hope it carries on this summer,” Smith said.

One big thing Smith pointed out to the Events Complex Board was the riders they had this winter which traveled to race here. He said they had racers from Gillette, Casper, Evanston, Dubois, Vernal and Roosevelt as well as several other places in and out of state.

To end the winter season, the RSMX had their annual banquet and barbecue Saturday night at the complex.

One thing the group is moving forward with to keep attracting riders to the area is becoming American Motorcycle Association certified. Smith said they have heard back from the AMA and are just waiting for final confirmation.

The group has a race in June and one in August with the state race in September. Smith said it is the State Championship race is September they want to use as its AMA sanctioned race. By doing this, it opens Rock Springs to be considered for one of the Loretta Lynn motocross qualifiers.

There has been much excitement and many positive conversations about having this race in Rock Springs because there currently is not one in the state of Wyoming.

Complex Executive Director Larry Lloyd said the group has done a fantastic job and really went above and beyond this winter. While they are starting to form the outdoor track, Lloyd said the complex is in need of straw bales. Not only for the track but he said for everything.
