ROCK SPRINGS – After leading Western Wyoming Community College to one of its best seasons in the past few years and receiving post-season honors, Irene Garrido Perez signed to continue her career at Division I school Minnesota.
Perez signed her letter to play with the Big Ten school that went 15-16 overall and 5-11 in conference play last season. The Mustangs finished with a conference record of 13-1 and an overall record of 24-6.
Perez averaged 13.6 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and just under two assists per game last season.
In a Facebook post, WWCC Head Coach Garett Sherman spoke about Perez and her decision to sign with Minnesota.
“As a coach she was a pleasure to be around, she made excellent grades, she worked hard without me having to tell her one time to pick it up,” Sherman said “I could get on her for something she did wrong (even if I was wrong) and she would look me in the eye and say “yes coach.” When we had a big game or needed a big shot to win a game she never said a word but she knew we were going to “call her number.” And I can’t think of a game in two years she didn’t come through for us… The best way I can describe her is like a lot of the girls on our team this year… if you have a daughter and she grows up to be like her you’re going to be very happy.”
