COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Wyoming diving earned four first place finishes over two days of competition this weekend at the Air Force Invitational led by freshmen Karla Contreras and Scotia Mullin.
Contreras, a two-time Mountain West Diver of the Week this season, swept the women’s events with personal-best scores in each. Her score on the 3-meter board of 339.35 was nearly eight points better than her previous career best. On the 1-meter, Contreras set a new personal best of 307.80, improving on her previous record set last weekend. The Cowgirls put forward their best performance on the platform, with senior Keely Bishop finishing second behind Contreras. Bishop scored a 220.65 while Contreras tallied a team-record mark of 281.50.
“This meet is a good gauge for everyone heading into conference meets,” UW head diving coach Kyle Bogner said. “Yesterday the women did really well across the board. Going first and second in the platform was great and Keely stepped up. For everyone, there were positives and there were things to work on. We know what we need to focus on but it sets us up well for conference championships. A lot of the Mountain West competition was there. It sets us up even better for zones because of the similar format of the meet and how successful we were this weekend.”
Mullin earned victory on platform, which was the strongest event for the Cowboys, as well. Mullin’s winning score of 397.65 marked a new personal best and the second-highest score in Wyoming history. Senior Jacob Rehmeier placed fourth, scoring a 272.90, while redshirt-sophomore Ryan Russi placed sixth with a score of 264.20. Both were new personal bests. Russi also placed fourth in the 3-meter event, scoring a season-high 323.95 for his first NCAA Zone qualifying score on the year.
The Cowgirl divers will return to action at the Mountain West Championships, February 15-18, in College Station, Texas. The Cowboys will then compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships February 22-25, in Houston, Texas.
Russi Named WAC Diver of the Week
Redshirt sophomore Ryan Russi was named Western Athletic Conference Diver of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Tuesday morning.
Russi swept both diving events in Saturday’s dual against UNLV. Wyoming’s divers competed at the Air Force Invitational but scores applied to the dual being held in Las Vegas. The Murrieta, Calif., native posted a 304.70 to win the one-meter board and followed up the performance with a first-place score of 323.95 on the three-meter. Both were season-best marks and the first NCAA Zone qualifying scores of the year for Russi.
Cowboy swimming and diving will return to action at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, February 22-25, in Houston, Texas.
