GREEN RIVER – On April 11, 2012, Ivan Sweets was found guilty by a jury of his peers in the Third Judicial District Court of Sweetwater County, the Honorable Judge Nena James presiding, of one count of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, a felony and one count of Wrongful Disposing of that Property, a felony.
He was sentenced to a term of six-to-eight years in the Wyoming State Penitentiary on each count, to be served consecutively.
Sweets appealed these convictions and sentences to the Wyoming Supreme Court.
Sweets challenged the sufficiency of the evidence to support his conviction for Obtaining Property by False Pretenses. He also argued that the two criminal counts should have merged for purposes of sentencing as they both arose from one criminal act.
The Court rejected these claims and on August 14, 2013, Sweets’ convictions and sentences were upheld by the Wyoming Supreme Court.
