YAP Learns History of Trails While Blazing New Ones

SWEETWATER COUNTY – The Young And Professionals of Sweetwater County (YAP) met on June 9th at Coyote Creek for a presentation on the Historic Trails of Sweetwater County.

The California, Oregon, Mormon, Overland and Cherokee Trails and their derivatives were discussed. The current locations of the trails were described to encourage visitation. Specific sites described included the Rock Springs, the Sage School Park ruts, the Green River crossings, Little Sandy Park and South Pass.

The role of Ezra Meeker, trail pioneer and early trail conservationist, was discussed. Don Hartley, the Historic Preservation Officer for Western Wyoming for the Oregon California Trails Association (OCTA) was the presenter. A field trip to visit the various historical locations is under consideration.
