Lady Wolves Lose Lead Late

Lady Wolves Lose Lead Late

GREEN RIVER – It went right down to the end, but the Green River Lady Wolves lost the lead late and fell to Evanston to open conference play Thursday night.

The Lady Wolves looked to get conference play started on the right foot after finishing their non-conference schedule 1-9. On Thursday, the ladies welcomed Evanston who brought a record of 4-7 to the contest.

Hattie Hix had the Lady Wolves off and running, but Evanston responded to take a seven-point lead after one, 12-5. Green River was able to stay close and buckets by Averee Cobb, Mallory Seymour and Taylor Stoeger had them within three of the Lady Devils. Evanston scored the last four of the second quarter to head into the break up by five, 25-20.

Green River struggled a bit to open the second half, only managing three points. The Lady Red Devils took advantage, jumping out to a double-digit lead, 34-23. Baskets by Emily White and Stoeger had the Lady Wolves within striking distance heading into the final quarter, 36-31.

Behind strong defense, Ashley Dewey and Taylor Stoeger were able to push Green River over the hump and into the lead, 42-40 halfway through the final quarter. Dewey continued to score and Cobb had the Lady Wolves up four with just over two minutes left.

Turnovers would bite Green River in the final minutes as Evanston jumped back into the lead. The Lady Red Devils were able to hit their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the seven-point win, 54-46.
