ROCK SPRINGS – The wrestlers of Rock Springs High School continue to show strength with another good showing in Lander this past weekend.
The Tigers battled 22 other teams scoring 109 points for the sixth-place finish. Star Valley took first with 224 followed by Powell (168), Laramie (128), Worland (121) and Glenrock (116).
Individually, John Nowland brought home another individual title at 195. Four other Tigers finished with third-place honors.
While Nowland was able to bring home top honors, it was not easy for the young wrestler. After a bye in the first round, Nowland would earn a spot in the semifinals with a 6-2 decision over Tanner Verplancke of Buffalo.
In the semis, Nowland would face Jackson’s Dilon Hartranft who is 18-4 on the season. It would again go the distance and again it was Nowland, 12-6. It would be Star Valley’s Erickson Vicente who would face Nowland in the finals. Vicentre is 18-5 on the season. It would go down to the end, and again, Nowland would have his hand raised in a 6-4 decision.
Four other Tigers would bring home third-place honors. At 106, Cameron Metcalf would rebound from an early loss to Spencer Angell of Star Valley, to finish third. He would win three straight, two by fall, to earn a shot at third. He would beat Angell by a 3-0 decision in the match.
Ashton Dupape would also fall early only to get revenge late. He would fall to Lander’s Nathan Redman but three wins later would face him for third. Dupape would take third at 113 by a forfeit over Redman.
After a bye to start the 120 division, Cole Seymour would move into the semifinals. He would fall to Dane Waldron of Star Valley in a 9-1 decision. Seymour would win his next two to finish in third.
Teno Trujillo would respond from a loss in the semifinals to win his final two matches by fall to take third at 145. He would beat teammate Wyatt Yenney in the third-place match.
On Jan. 30, the Rock Springs Tigers will host the conference duals before finishing the regular season with three straight duals.
