Charles and Brogan Impress in 400 Hurdles on Saturday

BERKELEY, Calif.  – Junior Jordan Charles and senior McKenzie Brogan both moved up the University of Wyoming’s all-time top-10 list in the 400-meter hurdles during Saturday’s Brutus Hamilton Challenge. The duo combined to win the men’s and women’s race at the high-end meet.

Charles ran a personal-best 51.49 on the men’s side to move up to sixth in Cowboy history. His time is second fastest in the Mountain West this season and 29th in the NCAA. Brogan was just as impressive on the women’s side with a personal-best 59.40 to advance to fifth in Cowgirl history. Her time is also second fastest in the MW this season and 57th in the NCAA. Charles also finished runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles in 13.90, just one tenth of a second away from a career best.

Other highlights for the Cowgirls included senior Sabina Sandberg winning the high jump with a leap of 5-8, just three quarters of an inch away from her personal best.  Freshman Allegra Carson tied her best mark in the triple jump with a mark of 38-1 1/4, which keeps her eighth in Cowgirl history in the event. Sophomore Day Timberman leapt a personal-best 37-4 1/2 in the event. Junior Cassidy Meade ran 2:10.8 in the 800 meters to finish five tenths away from her career best.

For the Cowboys, sophomore Garrett Lynch placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 50-6 3/4 and sixth in the discus at 155-6. Freshman Bryce Ailshie was seventh in the 800 meters in 1:51.2.

Wyoming’s full squads will be back in action when the Cowboys and Cowgirls host the 7220 Invite on Friday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. MT.

 

 

 

 

 

UW Tied for Seventh after Two Rounds of MW Championship

McCullough, Wallen tied for 13th

 TUCSON, Ariz.  – The University of Wyoming men’s golf team shot a 290 (+2) during the second round of play at the 2016 Mountain West Championship, and now sits tied for seventh with the final round left to play.

The Cowboys are tied with Air Force and Boise State with a two-day total of 580 (+4). Sophomore Drew McCullough and junior Ryan Wallen are tied for 13th to lead the Pokes, as they each have a 142 (-2) through two rounds.

“I am proud of this group for the way they are continuing to stay focused and compete,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “We are more than capable of putting together a great round tomorrow and then make a big move.”

Wallen tied his season low and was the lone Cowboy in the red on Saturday. He had four birdies and fired a 68 (-4) to jump 26 spots. McCullough recorded a 75 (+3), while senior Kamrin Allen shot a 73 (+1) to move his two day total to 149 (+5) and sit tied for 40th.

Redshirt sophomore Arron Lickteig is tied 33rd with the final round left, as he shot a 74 (+2) on Saturday. Sophomore Quintin Pope rounds out the lineup for UW, and is tied for 50th after a second-round score of 77 (+5). Lickteig has 147 (+3) through two rounds, while Pope has 153 (+9).

“There were only four other teams that had a better round than us today, so we are definitely digging our way back,” Jensen added.  “We understand that good things will happen if we keep our composure and keep working hard. These guys are doing just that and will continue to do so tomorrow.”

No. 37 New Mexico jumped into the team lead after a second-round 285 (-3), and now has a total of 565 (-11). No. 29 UNLV is two shots back, as Nevada’s Corey Eddings remained in the individual lead with a two-round total of 136 (-8).

Wyoming Tennis Sweeps Colorado State

FT. COLLINS, Colo. – The Wyoming tennis team (10-11 overall, 3-2 MW) closed out the regular conference season with a 7-0 victory over the Colorado State Rams (5-14, 0-6 MW) on Saturday afternoon.

“I thought we were very professional today as the way we played and went about,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “We executed the small details very well today. We will take a couple of days to recover and be ready to go again at the MW.”

Wyoming started off the match strong winning the opening point of the day. The team of Magdalena Stencel and Nastya Tokareva defeated Aina Hernandez Soler and Madison Porter, 6-1, followed by a 6-1 win from Dorottya Jonas and Miranda Talbert against Maddie Buxton and Caroline Henderson.

The Cowgirls continued the momentum by sweeping all six singles matches. Stencel dropped only game in her match 6-1, 6-0 against Laia Hernandez Soler followed by Jonas with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Aina Hernandez Soler. At the number three spot, Tokareva won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 while Koonik defeated Buxton, 6-1, 6-3. Sanne Hoekstra earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Porter and Tessa van Der Ploeg beat Celine Voss, 6-0, 6-3.

UW will be back in action next week at the 2016 MW Championship in Ft. Collins. The Cowgirls’ opponent and time have yet to be determined.
