2 More Bats Test Positive for Rabies in Rock Springs

ROCK SPRINGS — The Rock Springs Animal Control received two positive rabies tests from the Wyoming State Laboratory this week from two bats in the community.

According to a post on the RSAC’s Facebook page, both bats were from incidents that occurred in August. The first confirmed case was from a call that occurred at the Rock Springs High School and the second was on Tamarack Drive.

These two cases are not related to the two other rabid bats reported earlier this year. The first bat was found in June on a sidewalk, and the second bat was found at a residence on M Street in July. Both of these bats were reported because they were out during the day, which is abnormal behavior for a bat.

Though the weather is starting to change the little brown bats, Myotis lucifugus, will still be present in the community until hibernation occurs.

We are urging the public to make sure all your pets are vaccinated for rabies. If you see any bats crawling on the ground and not able to fly, or out during the daytime please contact Rock Springs Animal Control at 352-1455 or Central Dispatch at 362-6575.
