EVANSTON – Teams took the wrestling mats this past weekend as another season got underway. The Tigers of Rock Springs opened with a seventh-place finish in Evanston.

The Tigers finished with a team total of 84 points to take the seventh spot. Utah’s Bear River took home the team title by one point beating Nevada’s Springs Creek, 203 to 202. Green River was the highest placing Wyoming team at the tournament. They scored 189 points to take the third position. Duchesne finished fourth, Evanston fifth and Lyman Sixth. The Tigers were six points behind Lyman.

Individually, Cameron Metcalf paced the Tigers placing second in the 106 division. Metcalf had to wins by decision to make it to the 106 finals. He beat Lyman’s Colten Ellison 5-0 to open the tournament and followed it with a 7-4 decision over Springs Creek’s Josh Tripp. Metcalf would lose in the finals to Green River’s Cyro Montoya to finish in second.

The Tigers had four wrestlers come home with fourth-place finishes. Ashton Dupape would finish 2-2 for the tournament in the 113 division. Dupape would score a fall in his first match and rebound from a loss in the semifinals to earn a major decision win, 11-3, to move into the consolation finals. He would come up just short as Jace Saxton of Springs Creek would take a 7-3 decision to earn third.

At 120, Cole Seymour would earn another fourth-place finish for Rock Springs. After getting beat in the quarterfinals by Gage Byers of Green River, Seymour would respond with three straight wins to move into the consolation finals. Riverton’s Keanan Pfisterer would pin Seymour for third place.

Brenden Baucum would be the next Tiger to finish in fourth. Baucum would drop his first match but would get a chance to regroup with a bye in the second round. Baucum would score three wins in a row, all by decision, to move into the third-place match. Evanston’s Sam Lester would win by fall in the consolation finals to knock Baucum down to fourth.

The final Tigers to take home fourth-place honors was Wyatt Yenney. He would move to the semifinals after a bye in round one and a 12-6 decision victory in the semis. Kaggen Canfield of Bear River would pin Yenney to move into the finals. Yenney would bounce back in the consolation semifinals with an 8-4 decision over Duchesne’s Colby Allred. Going for third place, Yenney would face Austin Guymon of Lyman. Guymon was able to score a fall over Yenney at the 2:12 mark to take third.

Other Tigers who placed in Evanston included Joe Walker and Cruz Maestas. Walker would win two matches to take sixth while Cruz Maetas would pin Big Piney’s Chase Meeker to take fifth.
