ROCK SPRINGS – What do you get when you put the traditional sounds of country music with the emotion and rawness of punk music? What you get is the Country Punk n’ Roll tour that will be making a stop at the Park Lounge this Friday.
Salt Lick Records recently announced a tour with its roster of artists Riva Rebels and Lorin Walker Madsen. Lorin Walker Madsen and the Hustlers will start at 9 p.m. followed by the Wade Wilson project and then Riva Rebels will finish up the night.
“The goal of the tour is to take two different styles of music with essentially the same rebellious spirit and put it all in one venue,” said Salt Lick’s Josh Madsen.
The Country Punk n’ Roll tour will consist of Salt Lake’s three-piece punk outfit Riva Rebels alongside label mates Lorin Walker Madsen and The Hustlers, who play their own version of country music. The tour is set to cover the western United States with 25 dates announced.
Riva Rebels was formed in the spring of 2012 by Josh Madsen (guitar & vox), Germ (drums & backup vocals) and Ron Prince (bass). Their first single “Family” was recently released on Salt Lick Records with a full-length recording slated for early 2015.
Lorin Walker Madsen is a musician based in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has been playing music for over fifteen years and writing music for almost as long. Within a few years of first picking up an instrument, Lorin began collaborating with other musicians; eventually forming and performing with a number of bands over the years. He spent the past ten years touring the U.S. in some of these groups, namely The Lauderdale and Blackhounds.
Lorin recently spoke with SweetwaterNOW to talk about his passion of music and the tour.
When most people think of music scenes, they tend to think of the Sunset Strip or Seattle. Salt Lake City is usually not on that list. From the Salt Lake City scene, Lorin Walker Madsen emerged.
Lorin has been part of several bands throughout the years but decided to try a new direction around two years ago. That was when he started his solo project. He said his music is definitely country as he grew up with very traditional country like George Jones but had an older brother who was blasting punk rock and older ska punk. He explained that through his brother he also gravitated towards bands like Rancid and Operation Ivy but never gave up his love of country. Putting these two together, Lorin said, is what forms the “Trucker Punk” sound.
“That’s what they call it,” he said. “They have also called my music outlaw country, which I am fine with, even though I have never been to jail or anything like that.”
Some other influences and inspiration for his sound comes from some of his current influences, Hank Williams III and Bob Wayne.
Being on the road as much as Lorin has, he has seen many places, met many people and has had experiences not many people have had. He said it was through spending the last ten years on the road that he gets the inspiration for writing music. He said last year alone, he did around 200 shows throughout the states.
Even though he has spent most of the last decade on the road, he has found time to record and produce his music for the masses. He said he had been working with some amazing live and studio musicians to capture the energy and sound. Since he decided to go solo, Lorin has released acoustic demos that are available for free download at soundcloud.com/lorinwalkermadsen.
In addition to the acoustic demos, Madsen has two official releases in the works. Lorin worked with Matt Winegar of Primus and Coheed and Cambria on these releases. He said the tracks will be available for free downloads online in addition to being sold at his shows.
Madsen will be on the road with the Country Punk n’ Roll Tour for the rest of August and September.
“Its a lot of whiskey drinkin, boot stomping good time,” Lorin said of the tour. “If you want to get away from everyday life, have a good time and leave enjoying the show come on down. Rowdy country and punk is a good blend.”
