Black Butte High School Reveals Graduation Plans

ROCK SPRINGS — Graduation plans for Black Butte High School Class of 2020 will look different than previous years. With statewide public health orders focused on avoiding large gatherings, traditional graduation is no longer a rational option.

BBHS Principal Bryant Blake outlined a few changes to the graduation ceremony that this year’s graduating class will have the opportunity to participate in.

Here is the outlined schedule for BBHS graduation:

  • Individual Graduation Ceremony – May 19
    • Individual appointments will be scheduled through the office. Please be on the lookout for communication coming to families directly from the school. These appointments will be staggered to allow proper physical distancing and time for each family to build memories. Appointments will occur in the afternoon/early evening hours of Tuesday, May 19. At this time students will get pictures taken in front of the school for the ceremony video and in order to honor the decorated cap tradition, caps will also be photographed so everyone will be able to see them.
  • Group Ceremony – May 19
    • After all of the individual appointments and photos are done, students and immediate family members will return to the large WWCC parking lot near BBHS beginning at 6:30 pm. At this point, cars will be directed to specific parking spots while maintaining social distancing. At 7:00 pm, students and immediate families will then be asked to step out of their cars to celebrate the turning of the tassel as a whole group.

Prior to graduation on May 19, the school has announced a few other events which will be held in honor of the BBHS Class of 2020.

Other events are listed below:

  • Cruise the Drag – May 8
    • This is something new and special for every senior, unique and just for the class of 2020! Each of them are being recognized with yard signs that have their name on it and displayed all along Dewar Drive. These signs will remain through graduation.
  • Senior Parade – May 18
    • Wear your cap and gown, decorate your car, and we will caravan across town to celebrate our seniors in a big way. We want our families and town to line the parade route to celebrate, congratulate, honk, and cheer loud for the class of 2020! Watch for more details to come!

“We understand the overwhelming emotion and heart break people are experiencing with not being able to experience a traditional graduation,” Bryant said. “Together, if we remain excited and plan amazing things, they will get excited. They will remember the heartbreak, but they will remember all the unique and great celebrations and new experiences that happened just for them!”
