BLM Monitoring Sublette Wildfire

COKEVILLE – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) High Desert District is monitoring the Sublette Wildfire approximately 10 miles north of Cokeville, Wyo., in the Raymond Mountain Wilderness Study Area.

The wildfire was first reported on Sept. 24; the cause is under investigation. About one acre of subalpine fir, aspen, sagebrush and grass has burned in steep, inaccessible terrain on Raymond Mountain. The fire is creeping and smoldering but producing significant smoke due to heavy timber.

Resources on the wildfire include one Type III helicopter and one Type VI engine. Based on current and expected weather, including significant moisture, the fire will remain in monitor status unless it moves toward private land located half a mile to the west. If this occurs, minimum impact suppression tactics will be used.

Outdoor recreationists are urged to use caution or avoid the area entirely since fire behavior can change suddenly and fire spread is unpredictable if high winds develop.
