LARAMIE – The Wyoming tennis team (9-2 overall) cruised to a 7-0 win over the Hastings College Lady Broncos (0-3 overall) on Saturday morning at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts. The Cowgirls have now won six straight matches which is the longest since the 2014-15 season when they won 10 in a row.
“It’s always great to pick up a pair of wins at home,” head coach Dean Clower said. “I feel like we are continuing to get better at the details on the court especially in doubles. The ladies need to rest up and be ready play Iowa State on the road next week.”
In doubles action, the Cowgirls dominated by winning all three matches. Magdalena Stencel and Milka Genkova defeated Sarah Knight and Bailey Christy, 6-0, followed by a 6-0 win by Tessa van Der Ploeg and Elisa Koonik against Kelsey Brown and Madison Fortunato. UW wrapped up doubles play with Ana Tkachenko and Miranda Talbert defeating Alexa Obermier and Brenna Obermier, 6-0.
The momentum continued to be with Wyoming in singles action with the team only dropping three games. Koonik won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, over Brenna Obermier, while Stencel rebounded with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Brown. The Cowgirls clinched the match with van Der Ploeg winning her tenth dual match of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alexa Obermier. Genkova won easily over Fortunato, 6-0, 6-0. The final two matches saw Tkachenko defeat Knight, 6-0, 6-0, and Talbert earning a straight set win, 6-0 6-0, over Christy.
Idaho Vandals
The Wyoming tennis team (8-2 overall) edged out the Idaho Vandals (6-5 overall, 4-0 Big Sky) by a 5-2 final on Friday afternoon at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.
“The first time we played Idaho, they didn’t have their number one singles player. Today, they did and so we knew it was going to be a battle going in,” head coach Dean Clower said. “We were ready to play, so kudos to the ladies for being ready to go. I think the match today also showed how deep of a team we are. We have eight individuals that will get after it, you won’t get an easy line anywhere in either singles or doubles. It’s fun to see every day everyone getting after it, it makes us a tough team to beat.”
Wyoming earned a hard fought doubles points by winning two of three matches. The duo of Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg dropped a 6-4 contest against Mariana Petrei and Lucia Badillos, but Miranda Talbert and Magdalena Stencel evened it up with a 6-2 win against Jessica Brzozowska and Claire Yang. It came down to the final match between Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko against Maria Tavares and Ana Batiri. The match went back and forth until the Cowgirls took a 5-4 lead and was on serve. After the Vandals evened it up at five all, Wyoming took the final two games to win the match, 7-5.
It was a battle in singles with the Cowgirls taking four of six matches. Jonas earned the second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Brzozowska, while the Vandals notched its first point with Petrei defeating Stencel, 6-0, 6-4. van Der Ploeg won a tough one, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, over Badillos, but Idaho closed the score to 3-2 with Tavares earning a three set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, over Milka Genkova. UW would clinch the match with a two set win, 6-1, 6-3, by Tkachenko. In the final match of the day, Koonik beat Batiri, 6-1, 7-5.
