Despite solid round one wins to open the 2014 Tennis State Tournament the ladies of GRHS and RSHS will all open Friday play in the consolation brackets

GILLETTE – While both the Lady Tigers and Lady Wolves had strong wins in the opening rounds on Thursday, neither team has anyone left in the main bracket as they will all open play of Friday in the consolation brackets.

 

No. 1 Singles

For the ladies, Green River’s Anna Ujvary is the only Sweetwater County player competing at state. Ujvary rolled in her opening match 6-0 and 6-2 but was beat in straight sets in the second round, 6-0 and 6-0. She will open play on Saturday in the consolation bracket against Cody’s Meg Dickerman.

 

No. 2 Singles

Both Lady Tiger Gretchen Baldwin and Green Rivers Alex Palmer were defeated in the opening round. Baldwin had a bye in her first match in the consolation bracket and will face Kelly Walsh’s Ally Richards on Friday. Palmer was eliminated after losing in the consolation round.

 

No.1 Doubles

Lexy Newman and Zoe Baldwin started off strong for Rock Springs winning in the opening round 6-1 and 6-1. The ladies dropped in round two in a tough match against Jackson, 6-3, and 6-4. Newman and Baldwin will face Laramie to open play on Friday.

Lady Wolves McKenzie Lucas and Isabel Leininger were eliminated after losing both matches on Thursday. One of the losses came from the Laramie team Newman and Baldwin will face on Friday. Lucas and Leininger were beat by Laramie, 6-3 and 6-2.

 

No. 2 Doubles

Both Rock Springs’ Keeri Klein and Tasha Bentley and Lady Wolves Holly Huber and Cassie Deverick opened state with first round wins, Klein and Bentley 6-0 and 6-1 while Huber and Deverick advanced in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.

Bentley and Klein battled hard in the second round but lost in three sets, 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3. Huber and Deverick were taken down in straight sets in round two, 6-4 and 6-0.  Rock Springs will face Cody on Friday while the Lady Wolves team will battle Rawlins to stay in the tournament.

 

No.3 Doubles

After losing the first set, 6-4, the Lady Tiger team of Leah Allen and Casey Swendlund took the next two 6-4 and 6-3 to open state with a win. They fell in  round two, 6-4 and 6-2. They will face Cody on Friday. For Lady Wolves Jessica Scott and Savannah Hook, their season came to an end with two losses on Thursday.
