Equipment Failure Possible Cause for Fatal Crash Near Cheyenne

CHEYENNE — On January 24, 2022, a fatal crash occurred around milepost 353 on Interstate 80 west of Cheyenne, Wyoming. At 10:35 a.m., Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were notified of a one-vehicle rollover.

A 2000 Ford Excursion was headed east on Interstate 80, pulling a utility trailer. The vehicle sustained a tire blowout, causing the driver to lose control of the Ford. The vehicle and trailer entered the median and overturned.

The driver of the Ford has been identified as 38-year-old Chicago, Illinois resident Alejandro Flores. Flores was not wearing his seatbelt and was transported to the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Speed and equipment failure is being investigated as potential contributing factors.

This is the 2nd fatality on Wyoming’s roadways in 2022 compared to 8 in 2021, 3 in 2020, and 12 in 2019 to date.
