ATLANTA, Ga. – Former Wyoming women’s basketball player Jordan Kelley was honored this week by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as the High School Assistant Coach of the Year.
The WBCA Assistant Coach of the Year award is presented to one associate head coach or assistant coach in each membership division who demonstrates commitment to their program, their student-athletes and their head coach; their impact coaching on court; their mentorship and impact on other coaches; and their professional manner and attitude.
“This past season has been an awesome experience,” Kelley said. “I didn’t know exactly where my path was going to take me, but I really found a passion for the game. I’m honored and it’s a privilege to have received this award. The team and staff worked hard all year and I truly believe that’s why we were successful in to the state tournament. This experience has really prepared me to move forward in my career.”
Kelley, from Gillette, Wyo., spent this past season as a member of the Regis Jesuit High School coaching staff in Colorado. The Raiders went 20-7 overall while the team advanced to the 2017 CHSAA Class 5A state tournament semifinals.
During her two-year career, Kelley played in 41 games along with 32 stars. As a senior, she was averaging 10.5 points and a team-leading 9.3 rebounds before suffering a career-ending knee injury 11 games into the campaign. In her first season with the program, she averaging 7.6 points and 7.1 rebounds in 30 games. Her numbers led her to being named the Mountain West Newcomer of the Year in 2015. She graduated with a degree in kinesiology and health in the spring of 2016.
The Assistant Coach of the Year award originated in 2016 and is present annually. Founded in 1981, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association is the professional association for coaches of women’s and girls’ basketball at all levels of competition. The WBCA offers educational resources that coaches need to help make themselves better leaders, teachers and mentors to their players; provides opportunities for coaches to connect with peers in the profession; serves as the unifying voice of a diverse community of coaches to the organizations that control the game; and celebrates those coaches, players and other individuals who excel each year and contribute to the advancement of the sport.
