Green River Falls to Evanston in Three

EVANSTON – The Green River Lady Wolves struggled Thursday night on the road as they fell to Evanston in three sets, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-20.

Third place was up for grabs as both the Evanston Lady Red Devils and the Green River Lady Wolves entered played even at 2-2 in conference play. Last season, the two teams entered state as the first and second seed from the west.

The first set was one of runs. Evanston jumped up 9-3 but behind strong serving by Abby Alcorn and the blocking of Katie Banks, the Lady Wolves battled back to take the lead, 11-10. The Lady Devils scored the next eight behind a diving, defensive effort. Andri Dewey finally stopped the run. Evanston maintained the lead and despite fighting off three set points, the Lady Wolves would drop the first, 25-18.

It was all Evanston to start the second as they scored the first six points of the set. An Andri Dewey block again stopped the run. Behind Dewey serving and Taylor Stoeger at the net, Green River pulled within one. Despite the best GRHS efforts, Evanston was able to maintain the two-point advantage for the next several points.

With the score 16-14, Evanston was finally able to get a little breathing room as they scored the next three to extend the lead. Katie Banks tried to keep the ladies of Green River close but Evanston continued to pull away and took set two, 25-17.

Taylor Stoeger and the serving of Andri Dewey would give Green River the early 3-1 lead to start the third. The Lady Wolves maintained the lead and a Banks kill had GRHS up 8-5. Evanston made a run, scoring the next four to take the lead away. Two Stoeger kills were the only highlights for Green River for the next several points as the Lady Red Devils jumped up five, 15-10.

Evanston outscored the Lady Wolves 7-5 over the next several possessions to take a 22-15 lead. Behind Banks and Hannah Hix the Lady Wolves clawed back in the set as they cut the lead to two, 22-20. That would be as close as Green River would get as Evanston closed out the match, 25-20.

The Lady Wolves will finally play in front of the home fans this Saturday as they host third-ranked Laramie.
