MARCH 1, 2020 UPDATE: In a press release this morning, Sweetwater County School District No. 2 made the following announcement:
Green River High School will be meeting with the WHSAA on Monday. According to the School District and Head Coach, Josh Wisniewski, questions remain about the official rulings at the 4A State Wrestling Tournament that resulted in the change of the team title. We ask that our supporters trust in our efforts as we strive to resolve this application of rules. We are very proud of the effort and accomplishments of our wrestlers throughout the season.
Wisniewski also posted to Facebook Sunday morning expressing his concern about the ruling and noted that there would be no parade.
“We do have some serious questions about the official rulings that occurred last night. No matter the outcome we are very proud of our team,” Wisniewski wrote. “We are all devastated… We ask that everyone trust in the process as we strive to resolve the application of the rules. Know that we are very proud of our wrestlers and their accomplishments throughout the season and at the 4A State Championships. At this time as we work through the emotions and final decision of the results we will not be doing a parade.”
SweetwaterNOW will continue to post updates as information becomes available.
CASPER — In a late report that surfaced on Twitter by the Casper Star-Tribune, the Green River High School Wrestling team was stripped of the 2020 4A title just hours after being named champions.
According to a tweet by the Wyoming High School Athletics Association, there was a scoring error that led to team points being adjusted. Kelly Walsh was named the 4A state champions.
Due to a scoring error, team points had to be adjusted, so Congratulations to the 2019-20 WHSAA 4A State Wrestling Champions the Kelly Walsh Trojans. pic.twitter.com/AI2hiuivSg

As included in the original report by the Casper Star-Tribune, the error came from a disqualified Kelly Walsh wrestler for flagrant misconduct. The Trojans were deducted three points for misconduct and another four for the scoring wrestler. As part of the WHSAA rules, two wrestlers are allowed in each weight class. The disqualified wrestler became the secondary wrestler for the Trojans, and Kelly Walsh’s other wrestler earned points which ultimately erased the four point deduction. Due to the correction, the Trojans finished with 211 points compared to Green River’s 208.5.
